FORSKNING:

Forskning har främst fokuserat på yogans effekter på mående, symptom och funktionsnivå, men det finns även studier som undersökt effekter på molekylär nivå, hjärnaktivitet och kognition

-  Dessa studier har bland annat kopplat yoga till förändringar i genuttryck associerade med bättre immunförsvar och stresshantering (Sharma et al., 2008)

-  Ökad aktivitet i hjärnstrukturer förknippade med ökad känslohantering och kognitiv kontroll (Froeliger, Garland, Modlin & McClernon, 2012)

-  Bättre minne (Rocha et al., 2012) och spatialt minne (Manjunath & Telles, 2004)

-  Bibehållen uppmärksamhet (Rangan, Nagendra & Bhatt, 2009)

-  Ökade nivåer av GABA (antas komma från djup och lugn andning) har observerats hos yogagrupper (27% högre GABA nivåer i yogagruppen jämfört med kontrollgrupp Streeter et al 2014)

-  Aktiverar och balanserar vårt dopaminnnätverk genom finmotorik och stora rörelser. Detta hjälper oss att deaktivera ”frysresponsen” samt har potentialen att öka vår förmåga att hantera stressfyllda situationer (Basal Ganglia-Gard 2015, Joseph Le Doux 1980)

-Frontalloben aktiveras och stärks via mindfulness meditation och instruktion, detta har förmågan att omdirigera aktiviteten till den vänstra delen som är relaterat till positivt tänkande (Holzschneider and Mulert)
